Spendset / Zero-based budgeting
What is zero-based budgeting?
Zero-based budgeting is a monthly spending plan where every dollar of income is assigned a job: bills, groceries, savings, sinking funds, until nothing is left unplanned. When Left to Budget reaches zero, your month is set. Zero means planned, not empty.
How a zero-based budget works
- Start with the income you expect this month (one or more sources).
- Fund fixed costs and bills first.
- Assign the rest to categories until Left to Budget is zero.
- Track spending against the plan as you go.
- Let unused category money roll forward when you want sinking funds to build.
Why people use zero-based budgeting
It makes tradeoffs visible. When every dollar already has a job, a new purchase has to come from somewhere. You decide those jobs first, then spend against the plan instead of reconstructing the month after the fact.
Safe-to-spend signals in Spendset
Beyond category balances, Spendset shows Available to Spend, Safe Today, and Until Payday so you can pace flexible money through the month. SpendCheck helps you check a purchase against your plan before you buy.
What zero-based budgeting is not
Spendset is a budgeting tool. It does not provide personalized financial, tax, or investment advice, and it does not guarantee financial outcomes. Your plan reflects the numbers you enter.
